Prerequisites: Basic Photovoltaics (PV 101)
This is a two-day in-person course held at MREA's Energy Storage Tech Center in Custer, WI. Class times are 9a.m. - 5p.m. CT.
Required Materials:
- Appropriate clothing and gear for working outdoors: closed-toe footwear, weather-appropriate clothing, gloves, water bottle, sunscreen, etc.
- Calculator & writing utensil
- Safety glasses
- Sack lunch (please pack your own lunch)

DAY ONE: ENERGY STORAGE FUNDAMENTALS (PV 451)
This eight-hour course introduces the fundamental components and aspects of energy storage systems (ESS) and solar plus storage (SPS) systems. Participants will explore the different aspects of varying forms of energy storage, the history of energy storage, reasons to incorporate energy storage, motivations to add solar PV to an ESS, and the difference between stand-alone and utility-interactive SPS systems.
Participants will define and differentiate between DC and AC coupled SPS systems, outline different configurations and varieties of energy storage technologies, and identify the factors that go into designing loads (electrical consumption) that will be backed up by the SPS system.
DAY 2: DESIGNING SOLAR PLUS STORAGE SYSTEMS (PV 452)
This eight-hour course demonstrates the design process of solar plus storage (S+S) systems, with an emphasis on lithium technologies. Participants will review design principles for S+S systems, beginning with an overview of the design process and the desired outcomes that can steer S+S design. Along with an analysis of daily loads and determining which loads will be backed up, numerous design variables will be explored in the sizing of the S+S system, such as energy and power capability of the battery bank, inverter sizing, array sizing, and system configuration.
Participants will discuss the necessary steps in the permitting process and explore energy storage system (ESS) location requirements and codes applicable to S+S installations. Heavy emphasis will be placed on safety regarding all aspects of S+S systems.
Continuing Education: PV 451 (day 1) & PV 452 (day 2) are approved for NABCEP Advanced Training & Continuing Education Credits.
